OUT OF STATE DRIVERS
If you are an out of state driver you are held to the same restrictions as a California driver. If you lose the right to drive in California because of a Los Angeles DUI, your license will also be suspended in your home state. While the arresting officer will not take your license as they would with licensed California drivers after an arrest for a Los Angeles DUI, but they will give you a temporary license that is effective for 30 days. After a Los Angeles DUI arrest, the out of state driver must contact the California Department of Motor Vehicle Driver Safety Office in the county that the arrest occurred. Failure to comply with the 10 day rule following a Los Angeles DUI arrest will result in automatic suspension of your driver’s license after 30 days. This will likely be effective in your home state. Furthermore, if you do not retain an attorney you must return to the courthouse listed on the citation or have a warrant placed for your arrest.
